Why a Senior Project Matters

Research projects or passion projects for high schoolers of all grade levels are more important than ever. Beyond just providing a boost in your college admissions, a senior project is a great step in your personal journey towards figuring out what you want to do in your career and giving you the momentum to succeed during college. This form of project-based learning ensures that you gain hands-on experience and skills that have a lasting impact on your academic and professional future. For example, during his gap year before applying to college, Polygence alum Arihant Choudhary completed a project in data science where he analyzed a petabyte (a million gigabytes!) of climate data to do predictive modeling for monsoons in India. Not only did Arihant showcase this project in his college application to help him get into UC Berkeley, but Arihant fell in love with research through his Polygence experience and it gave him momentum to join two computer science research labs at Berkeley. Conducting an engineering project can be an impressive senior-year project that doesn’t necessarily require advanced technical skills. You can consider projects such as building a model bridge out of everyday items, studying the design of airplanes, and through the project you’ll be able to learn engineering concepts and gain experience with prototyping and design. 

Artistic Creativity

Have you always gravitated towards painting, sketching, or other visual arts? Consider creating a portfolio of work to demonstrate your creativity and unique perspective. Educational Workshops

Passionate about a certain topic and want to share it with others? Host an educational workshop in your school or local community and gain valuable communication skills. You’ll also be able to showcase your commitment to helping the community around you. Example topics include financial literacy, mental health, healthy eating, or any other topic that appeals to you.

STEM Research Projects

One of the more traditional senior projects, a STEM research project, can involve you conducting your own experiments, joining a university professor in their research lab, or even analyzing a dataset. There’s a lot of flexibility in how to showcase research, but typically students will write a research paper to share their findings or create a visual presentation. You’ll gain experience talking to customers, understanding how to build and design and product, as well as how to market and sell your products. Regardless of whether the business is successful or not, launching a business can show your ability to take initiative. Writing Essays or Short Stories

We all know that college applications require a lot of essay writing, but what if, for your senior capstone project, you worked on an essay of your own about a topic you find interesting? What if you wrote a short fiction story to demonstrate your creativity? There are a ton of possibilities for writing projects, and they can include mediums like poetry. You’ll also have the opportunity to submit your works to various essay competitions and poetry contests where you can receive recognition and earn prizes such as cash and scholarships. 

Documentary or Short Film

If you’ve always been fascinated by film, then this could be a great senior project for you. You can use even just an iPhone to create a compelling documentary on a topic that you care about or a short film with an interesting storyline. Community Service Initiatives

Doing a community service project can show your dedication to social impact and helping those around you. As a community member, it also allows you to learn important skills in event planning and marketing. Community service initiatives could include things like organizing fundraising events for charity, creating a mentorship program between older high school students and underclassmen, or leading a food or clothing drive. 

Data Analysis 

With more data in the world than ever before, learning how to analyze datasets and communicate insights is an incredibly valuable skill. This process not only develops your critical thinking but also enhances your technical skills in data manipulation and interpretation. There are many datasets that are publicly online which you can analyze, in areas such as health, climate, stock markets, and sports. Go Viral on Social Media

Content creation is more accessible than ever in this age, so why not try to go viral with an Instagram or TikTok account that provides entertaining and/or informative content? The great part about this project is that there’s a niche on social media platforms for almost any kind of topic that you can imagine. You could start an account to share your expertise on a topic, or create entertaining day-in-the-life videos based on your personal interest. Additionally, creating content that involves an oral presentation can help you improve your communication skills and engage more effectively with your audience. This project can help you understand what resonates with audiences and how to build a social media following.

Environmental Sustainability Campaign

An Environmental Sustainability Campaign can start with researching prevalent environmental challenges, such as deforestation, pollution, or climate change, and finding what specific issues you’re passionate about tackling. Once you’ve found something that interests you, you can take a proactive stance on environmental issues by initiating a sustainability campaign at your high school or local community. A photography project allows you to capture a theme or topic through visual storytelling. It’s a great opportunity to express creativity and build artistic skills and technical skills with a camera. 

Coding Projects

Code can be used to create a ton of things, from creating useful websites to transformative apps. Doing a coding project can give you valuable technical practice with coding languages while also giving you the opportunity to make an impact. For example, Polygence alum Joseph worked with his computer science mentor Nathan to build a Duolingo-esque learning app that will instruct other students on the fundamentals of the Java programming language.

When Should I Start My Senior Project?

Ideally, a senior project should be completed before the early college admissions deadlines in the fall. This gives you the time to include your completed senior project on your college application. As a result, you should aim to start your senior project in the summer before your senior year. Of course, we know that your summers can be busy with extracurriculars, summer internships, summer research programs, and rest and relaxation, so it doesn’t hurt to start your senior project earlier and progress slowly as you manage the other activities you have on your plate.
