The Use of History in Film

Started Jan. 19, 2024

Abstract or project description

Diana is writing a paper about the "use" of history in 2024 Oscar-nominated films: What is history doing in these films if they are not trying to be factual? Would the movies do as well or be as well-received if they weren't based on historical events and people? She will focus specifically on Oppenheimer, Maestro, and Killers of the Flower Moon to explore what traits these movies share, how their depictions differ from more traditional historical accounts, and why she thinks "history" matters to the entertainment value, if at all.
