Bio
Hi! My name is Jo and I have a Ph.D. in environmental engineering and currently work as a physical scientist. My research focuses on understanding emerging sources of air pollution in urban areas and how they age and transform in the atmosphere. I do a combination of laboratory and field work to sample emissions from different sources, and get to use chromatography and spectroscopy to understand what organic compounds are being emitted. I was mentored in high school and college by fabulous Ph.D. students who ensured my love of science was fostered and I would love to mentor the next generation! For fun, I enjoy hiking with my dog, Runa, and trying out local restaurants. I also love reading fiction and trying out new recipes.Project ideas
Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.
Did the COVID-19 stay at home orders affect air quality in your city?
Learn about the air quality monitoring that happens in your city and analyze if the stay at home orders affected seasonal trends in your city. In addition, you can learn more about different types of air pollution and what sources are linked to each.
Exploring environmental justice in your hometown
Using publicly available datasets, explore how environmental pollution exposure and health effects differs amongst different populations in your city.
Coding skills
Igor, RTeaching experience
I have mentored 6 undergraduate students in my department for a combination of senior projects and summer research. I have also mentored 2 high school students for a summer research experience. Lastly, I have been volunteering as a virtual tutor for a high school student in algebra for the past year.Credentials
